Abstract

Background: Young people's attitude towards transplantation is influenced by many factors such as: being brought up by one's family and school; patterns of behaviour to copy, personal experience, and contact with people awaiting transplantation or having undergone transplantation. The aim of this thesis: is to show selected attitudes of young people towards transplantation of organs in the Leżajsk district.
Material/Methods: The research was conducted in February 2009 among 100 people aged 16-22 and visiting their relatives in the hospital in Leżajsk. The method used was the diagnostic opinion poll. The research tool was the Questionnaire in an authorship version.
Results: Most of the respondents, i.e. 72%, do not know or are not in touch with any person waiting or having undergone transplantation. The majority (98%) of young people support the living donors of organs and tissue. Almost every one of them (97%) declares that they can donate their bone marrow to their relatives; only every second interviewee would give their marrow to an anonymous person. Only 3% of interviewees signed the declaration of will, which is a consent for the post mortem collection of their organs, and carry it with them.
Conclusions: 1. The interviewed are convinced that treatment by the transplantation method is right and they declare their readiness to donate organs post mortem. 2. Half of the studied group declare that they would sign the declaration of will which is consent for donation of organs. 3. Most young people have not discussed their attitude to the problem of donation of organs for transplantation with their family. 4. Young people see the need for, and declare their readiness, to take part in campaigns promoting transplantation of organs.
